American Women in the Transcendental and Pragmatist Movements

Abstract

Abstract Thirty years of search have demonstrated that women were as engaged in philosophical writing in the nineteenth century as in the more studied Early Modern and Twentieth Century Periods. It is now possible to ask the question: do their newfound texts fit into the conventional “patriarchal” historiography? To find the answer, we must survey the books which constitute that historiography and then experiment with challenging them with a handful of new texts.
