Abstract
A plea for studying human dignity from a comparative perspective using approaches based on cultural and political sociology opens this special issue. The other distinctive features of the proposed approach include the assumption of the cultural embeddedness of human dignity, the empirical orientation of the research, and the sensitivity to various degrees of the universality and malleability of culturally specific interpretations of human dignity.
