ARTERIOVENOUS CHANGES IN THE CONCENTRATION OF GLUTAMINE AND OTHER METABOLITES ACROSS THE RUMEN OF SHEEP

Abstract

Changes in the arterial and venous plasma levels of glutamine and other metabolites from the rumen of anesthetized sheep were detected. A new, specific enzymatic method for the assay of glutamine in plasma is described. The arterial concentration of glutamine, glucose, total reducing sugars, triglyceride and pyruvic acid were higher than the venous levels. Lactic acid levels were higher in the venous plasma, but no change was found in the plasma urea nitrogen, glycerol or non-esterified fatty acid levels.
