Abstract
The influence of energy intake on serum ascorbate levels in swine has been studied. There was a significant correlation between energy intake and serum ascorbate levels at age 85–95 days, as well as a significant correlation between terminal weights and serum ascorbate level. The level of ascorbic acid in the serum increased significantly with time in animals fed higher levels of energy, but not in animals which received lower levels of energy. This suggested that energy restriction inhibited the development of the capacity to synthesize ascorbate. A hypothesis was advanced to explain the findings.
