Abstract
Seventy-eight widely diverse genotypes of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) were grown on irrigated land at Lethbridge, Alberta in 1979, harvested at maturity and analyzed by reverse-phase liquid chromatography for vicine and convicine. The vicine content ranged from 0.45 to 0.90% with a mean of 0.59 ± 0.08. Although the concentration of convicine was lower than vicine within cultivars (except one), the coefficient of variation was greater for convicine (range = 0.15–0.54%, mean = 0.26 ± 0.07). The total glucoside concentration among genotypes varied from 0.69 to 1.26%. The negative correlation coefficient (r = − 0.025) between contents of vicine and convicine within cultivars was not significant, supporting the conclusion that the content of the two glucosides is under independent genetic control.
