Abstract
A 2-yr field study of the manganese content of oat (Avena sativa L.) plant tissue in Manitoba and Saskatchewan showed that levels frequently drop to below 15 ppm, a level at which ’gray speck’ symptoms are expressed. Plant manganese levels reflected available soil manganese. Oat cultivars differed in manganese uptake efficiency, and inefficient cultivars suffered sharp yield depressions when grown on manganese-deficient soils.
