Abstract
Cerenkov radiation counting was found to be an excellent method of radioassay of 210Pb in aqueous extracts of soils and acid digests of plant material. The use of polyethylene vials and a wavelength shifter 7-amino-1,3-naphthalene-disulfonic acid greatly improved the counting efficiency. Color quenching was the main factor in lowering counting efficiency but could be corrected using the channels ratio method. Extracts of soils having high organic matter contents showed severe color quenching. Pretreatment of these extracts with 30% H2O2 greatly increased the counting efficiency.
