Abstract
Cytoplasmic male (T) sterility, nitrogen treatment, and plant density did not influence significantly the xanthophylls and carotenes in maize (Zea mays L.) kernels. In only one of two single crosses was a difference in xanthophylls indicated as being due to kernel position on the ear. As a whole, the carotenoid pigments appear to possess a reasonably good buffered system with little variation in content under a variety of preharvest influences. These results are of particular significance in the production of high-carotenoid maize for feedstuff and in breeding for increased carotenoid content.
