5. The timing of the experiment was, as far as the war was concerned, also important. Penicillin became available just at the end of the eighth army desert campaign (February 1943) and was therefore in full swing and ready for use by the first army for the invasion of Sicily and Italy when the attack took place through the "soft underbelly of the Axis
