1. February 1985 Oxfordshire experienced four inches of snowfall. This was enough to overwhelm the capacity of the local authority to clear snow from the pavements. On minor roads the pavements remained icy and ungritted for many days. The maximum temperature in Oxford remained below freezing from 9 to 15 February, and snow remained on the ground until 21 February
