Our results are more like those of Kilbride et al who, in a single hospital study, reported that both mortality and disability rates were lower in infants of birth weight 401 to 800 g born in 1983-5, compared with those born in 1980-2.15 In our cohort, both survival and neurological outcome improved in the latter era for children with birth weights <800 g (figure)
