1. The association between STE and tropical sprue is uncertain. The similarity of the mucosal abnormalities and the epidemiological distribution of the two conditions suggests a close relation. There are arguments, however, to suggest that the two are distinct entities: in Africa, STE is common but tropical sprue is rare.
