1. 1988, for a total of 470 302 person years. In 1984, 1986, and 1988 participants were asked if they had had a cataract extraction. When a woman reported an extraction and granted permission to review medical records we contacted the ophthalmologist to confirm the dates of initial diagnosis and extraction and to determine any known cause of the cataract. A total of 805 participants reported a first cataract extraction after the return of their 1980 questionnaire.
