1. episodes were recorded for a one year period. All subjects were recruited into the cohort between 25 November 1970 and 23 November 1972. In 1981, the computerised records were used to identify all patients with a diagnostic code of Parkinson's disease. Two controls were randomly selected from the register of the same practice and matched by sex and same year of birth. The NHS numbers of all subjects were sent to the National Health Service Central Register to determine vital status.
