Uptake and transport of amounts of alcohol causes a dramatic increase in the absorption of materials that usually are excluded, and that this is apparently the result of an intercellular leak. It is also clear that the effect is confined to areas of small intestine actually exposed to the alcohol and is transient and reversible.
