1. Age at death in children who died of congenital heart disease last years of study, could not have influenced the results markedly. A balloon atrial septostomy can postpone but not change the unfavourable outcome of transposition of the great arteries, and period death rates before and after 1967 (when the septostomy was introduced) did not differ significantly
