Abstract

This study investigates the potential suprasegmental linguistic influence of Italian Sign Language (LIS) over spoken Italian in bimodal bilinguals. It focuses on the grammatical Non-Manual Markers (NMMs) of LIS occurring with the vocal production of wh- and polar questions, and conditional sentences in two groups: bimodal bilinguals and monolinguals. The results show a significantly higher level of NMMs in the bilingual group in all the structures, suggesting LIS linguistic influence over spoken Italian, probably due to the partial overlapping enabled by the different linguistic modalities (visual-manual modality vs. vocal-acoustic modality).
