Abstract

This work aims to study the syntactic and semantico-pragmatic properties of autem in Plautus. The connector has a fundamental binary value expressing the notion of addition and that of opposition. Therefore, autem is used as an addition marker to relate syntactic constituents, a marker ensuring the reorientation of language activity on the level of enunciation, a limitation marker intended to make a thematic selection among elements of a paradigm as well as a marker of contrastive focus with argumentative or non-argumentative scope. Besides, the study of extra-linguistic data has highlighted the functions of autem linking with non-verbal and aspects of the discourse situation.
