Language Proficiency and Educational Mobility among Ethnic Minorities in Hong Kong

Abstract

In Hong Kong, a former British colony and now a Chinese city many ethnic minorities have diverse cultural, religious, and racial backgrounds. It is a universal value that equality among different races and ethnicities is a basic human right and essential for social justice and well-being and therefore should be promoted and achieved. In Hong Kong, different forms of inequality remain in the education sector among ethnic minorities, limiting their education and social mobility. This paper investigates the contributing factors and forms of inequalities in education among ethnic minorities, as well as individuals' opinions on relevant issues through conducting literature reviews and interviews. Results demonstrate an overall positive attitude by ethnic minorities towards the current education systems, in several areas.
