Abstract
Abstract
Background
The global COVID-19 pandemic has brought forth multifaceted healthcare challenges, including the emergence of COVID-19-associated mucormycosis (CAM). This study investigates demographics, clinical presentation, endoscopic grading, radiological correlations, treatment modalities, and outcomes of CAM in Central India.
Methods
A retrospective analysis of 312 CAM patients (April-June 2021). Data included demographics, clinical profiles, endoscopic and radiological findings, laboratory results, and treatments. A novel endoscopic grading system was utilized to assess the severity of mucormycosis lesions. Statistical analysis, including chi-squared tests, was performed.
Results
Among 312 patients, 65% were male, 82% had comorbidities, and 84% presented with facial swelling. Endoscopic grading correlated with radiological manifestations (p < 0.05) and intraoperative findings. Surgical debridement and antifungal therapy were common treatments, yielding varied clinical outcomes. Mortality was 13% in advanced grades.
Conclusion
This study underscores the role of endoscopic grading in risk stratification and prognosis. Findings contribute to CAM management knowledge, underscoring tailored interventions’ significance.
