Abstract
AbstractWhile much has been written about Professor Henry M. Stommel as a scientist, little has been said about his role as a supervisor of graduate students. I had been at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology only 5 months, with no knowledge or experience of the ocean, when Stommel suggested I search for internal gravity waves in Massachusetts Bay. This essay describes my experiences under Stommel's tutelage.
