Abstract
A single solenoid, variable rate pump, whose right and left chamber end-systolic volumes are determined by the levels of the pulmonary and aortic end-systolic pressures, respectively, is described. In studies in a model of the circulation, the pump simulates to a high degree the functioning of the mammalian heart; and in acute experiments on dogs it has successfully replaced the heart for as long as 15 hr. It is suggested that with miniaturization the pump can be placed within the chest. artificial heart; circulation model Submitted on October 21, 1963
