Abstract
The phagocyte enzyme NADPH oxidase generates superoxide essential for antimicrobial defense;its genetic defects cause the immunodeficiency disorder chronic granulomatous disease. B lymphocytes and certain other nonphagocytes also express NADPH oxidase. Molecular approaches allow new ways to study the enzyme and promise to uncover why nonphagocytic cells express NADPH oxidase.
