Abstract

We found that intrathecally administered substance P enhanced colorectal motility in anesthetized rats. Neurokinin (NK) 1 receptors, but not NK2 receptors, were detected in preganglionic neurons of the pelvic nerves. Blockade of NK1 receptors in the spinal cord attenuated the enhanced colorectal motility in response to intracolonic noxious stimuli. The findings indicate that substance P may function as a neurotransmitter in the spinal reflex pathway controlling defecation.
