Abstract
Slices of rabbit kidney cortex concentrate 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid by an active aerobic process. The accumulation of 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid can be increased by acetate ion and decreased by dinitrophenol. In patients with malignant carcinoid, the excretion of the indole can be decreased by the intravenous administration of probenecid. These data suggest that the renal elimination of 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid, like that of p-aminohippuric acid, is achieved by glomerular filtration and active tubular excretion.
