Abstract
Epinephrine infusions inhibited glucose disappearance in insulinized eviscerated dogs at both normoglycemic and hyperglycemic blood levels. In contrast, administration of epinephrine had no acute effects on glucose disappearance in noninsulinized preparations, regardless of whether the animals were mainted at low or high blood sugar levels. The action of insulin on the final distribution volume of galactose was not affected by the simultaneous infusion of epinephrine. These data, in conjunction with various findings in the literature, were interpreted to signify that the metabolic fate of glucose after the administration of insulin was different from that occurring at hyperglycemic blood levels in the absence of insulin.
