Abstract
Dogs were prepared with vagus denervated total stomach pouches and with isolated vagus denervated Heidenhain and antrum pouches. Under these conditions the nervous phase of gastric secretion is excluded, and since the antrum does not come in contact with food, its activity in the release of gastrin is minimal. Nevertheless, portacaval transposition produced a marked augmentation of gastric secretion, presumably because some gastric secretory hormone or secretagogue elaborated by the intestines escapes inactivation or excretion by the liver.
