Abstract

This study provides compelling evidence that running-dependent intramuscular neutrophil recruitment requires both CX3CR1- and CXCR2-mediated signals that prime not only myofiber-derived myokine upregulations but also endothelium ICAM-1 and fractalkine expressions. The results revealed the importance of the exercise-evoked regional interplay among working myofibers, the adjacent endothelium, and recruited immune cells, including neutrophils and possibly ILC2s, which plays a key role in the organization of the intramuscular microenvironment supporting the performance of hindlimb muscles during running.
