Muscle pain from an intramuscular injection of hypertonic saline increases variability in knee extensor torque reproduction

Abstract

NEW & NOTEWORTHY: We provide novel data demonstrating that the presence of muscle pain interferes with estimations of torque produced by the knee extensors, which could impair judgment of work rate during endurance exercise. The novelty of our study is in the application of the hypertonic saline experimental model into a quadriceps muscle during short, submaximal isometric contractions at an intensity that provides a more translatable assessment of the impact of exercise-induced pain on work-rate regulation during whole body exercise.
