Abstract

The current study shows cardiac injury is not increased in female DCD hearts following global ischemia-reperfusion compared with male DCD hearts. In addition, mitochondrial dysfunction with DCD ischemia-reperfusion is comparable in both sexes. Sex-specific immune responses and hormone receptor modulation may contribute to suboptimal outcomes in male HTx recipients with female donor hearts.
