Abstract
Salts of potassium cations, complexed either by (18-crown-6) or (2.2.2 cryptand) with centrosymmetric I3
⊖ anions are crystallized and their structures recorded at 200 K: The crown ether solvated salt [C12H24O6K⊕ I3
⊖] (1, monoclinic, Cc, Z = 4, a = 840.3(1) pm, b = 1507.4(2) pm, c = 1739.8(2) pm, β = 98.75(1)°, R = 0.0318) is a solvent-free contact ion pair, whereas the cryptand-complexed salt, [C18H36O6N2K⊕] (C4H9OH)0.5[I3
⊖] (2, monoclinic, P2/n, Z = 4, a = 1110.9(2) pm, b = 1439.2(2) pm, c = 1953.1(4) pm, β = 93.73(1)°, R = 0.0556) contains disordered butanol solvent molecules and separated I3
⊖ anions.
