Abstract
Abstract
It is shown that the formation of β-Sn is preceded by the growth of a number of discrete crystalline states of tin, with structures very close, but not identical to that of β-Sn. These structures, designated as “excited β-Sn structures (states)” convert themselves into β-Sn during aging. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with micro-diffraction data are included to correlate the formation of the excited β-Sn states to one of the mechanisms of disproportion of the αj
-Sn structures. The electron diffraction and the Mössbauer results show that the β-Sn type of structures oxidize to cassiterite.
