Abstract
Summary
Chemical effects of the 35Cl (n, p)
35S reactions in various alkali chlorides, in hydrazine hydrochloride and in hydroxylamine hydrochloride were investigated. "Protection effects" of carriers, reducing groups and solvents were found to be very important in determinating the chemical fate of radiosulfur. Low valency sulfur species survived even "carrier-free dissolution" of the neutron irradiated hydrazine hydrochloride. The oxidation mechanism of radiosulfur according to KOSKI'S explanation does not fit the present experimental results. The possibility that certain molecules may occur should be considered in the neighborhood of the recoil atom which easily oxidize sulfur. The assumption is discussed that chlorine atoms act as strong "oxidants" at the moment of dissolution.
