Abstract
Summary
Chemical reactions of hot atomic iodine formed by recoil from a photoneutron emission process, (γ, n) have been studied. The yield of the hot substitution, 126I + CH3I → CH3
126I + I was determined. The probability of this process, compared to analogous reactions of hot hydrogen atoms, was found to be low. A possible reason for what appears to be a generally low efficiency of gas phase hot halogen atom substitution reactions is discussed.
