Abstract
The crystal structure of totrahydrokavaic acid, C14H18O3, has been determined by x-ray diffraction methods. The crystals are monoclinic, with the space group P21/c and the unit-cell dimensions: a = 5.577(1) Å, b = 32.93(2) Å, c = 7.799(2) Å, and β = 115.15(5)°. There are four molecules in the unit cell. The structure was solved by the symbolic addition procedure and refined by block-diagonal least-squares to an R factor of 8.0% for all 2466 reflections. Two molecules form a dimer across a center of symmetry by means of hydrogen bonds between the carboxyl groups.
