Abstract

The article sets out to describe methods of metaphor classification according to degrees of transparency. The author analyses modern linguists’ views on the “dead metaphor” concept against the background of the theory of the life cycle of a metaphor. The author comes to a conclusion that most phraseologisms retain a certain degree of transparency and can be successfully decoded. Therefore the communicative value of such fixed expressions should not be underrated as these type of metaphor never fail to produce a desired effect on the reader/listener.
