Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the types of estimation skills included in the middle school 5-8th grades mathematics textbooks and to examine their distribution according to the learning areas and chapters within the textbooks. In the research, four textbooks, one sample textbook for each grade level, from among the mathematics textbooks published by private publishing houses and approved by the Ministry of National Education (MoNE), used in public secondary schools in the 2020-2021 academic year, were examined. Document analysis, one of the qualitative research designs, was used in the research. In the findings, it was determined that the textbook contents including estimation were more intense at the 5th and 6th grade levels than at the 7th and 8th grade levels. While the most commonly used estimation type at each grade level textbook was operational estimation, it was seen that stack estimation was included in a limited amount of content. Numbers and operations learning area was determined as the only learning area that includes estimation skills at all grade levels. While it is seen that the content related to estimation in the textbooks is generally intense in the exercises and sample sections with solutions, it was seen that there is very little content in the activity sections and even no content is included in the 7th grade textbook. According to the results obtained by examining the textbooks published by private publishing houses, it was seen that the content related to estimation in the textbooks is not sufficient. For further research, the scope of the research can be expanded by adding the textbooks prepared by the MoNE publishing houses to this research. Also, this research can also be replicated at the primary and high school levels. It is also recommended for researchers to examine the textbooks of the past years in order to see how the textbooks have evolved in terms of estimation skills.
