Abstract
Each year, around one million indwelling urinary catheters are inserted in NHS hospitals ( Nazarko, 2010 ). These invasive devices may be clinically necessary, but they have the potential to cause harm. This article examines the importance of reducing risks of harm by ensuring that the need for catheterisation is reviewed, that drainage bags are secured (supported) and fixation devices are used safely when clinically indicated.
