Unexpected origin of magnetism in monoclinic Nb12O29 from first-principles calculations

Abstract
The unusual magnetism of m-Nb12O29 is attributed to the Nb atoms with valence states close to Nb5+(d0). This is in clear contradiction to the general belief that the magnetism originates from the Nb4+(d1) atoms.
