Introduction

Abstract

This first chapter stipulates the objective and scope of the book. In addition, it also covers briefly a number of topics that are useful for the discussion in later chapters but are outside the main scope of this book. These topics include thermodynamics and kinetics of chemical reactions and several key concepts in solid state chemistry. The last section of the chapter provides a quick overview of the next eight chapters of the book.
