Abstract
The properties of molecular solids depend on a number of factors. Electrostatic interactions dominate properties of ionic solids, however, to understand the physical properties of molecular solids it is necessary to consider the influence of molecular weight, conformation and the effects of weak van der Waals and polar interactions in defining the energy which binds the molecules together. This first chapter introduces the concept of structure–property relationships in molecular solids.
