Abstract

An unprecedented, base-mediated, nitro group-directed reductive coupling of 4-chloro-3-nitrocoumarin with α-bromoacetophenone under metal-free conditions is reported. The subsequent reductive intramolecular cyclization leads to versatile pyrrolocoumarins.
