Frederick Gowland Hopkins: Promoter of Women Biochemists

Abstract

Of all the research schools in our compilation, the biochemical research group of Frederick Gowland Hopkins stands out as exceptional in its high proportion of women researchers. In contrast to many of the other departments at Cambridge, and despite some criticism, Hopkins ensured a significant proportion of women researchers throughout his career. In this chapter, we have chosen four of many to highlight: Edith Willcock, Elfrida Cornish (Mrs Venn, Mrs Mattick), Muriel Wheldale (Mrs Onslow), and Marjory Stephenson.
