Abstract
Whereas ‘affable’ seemed to have described the male chemists in previous chapters, this was not a term which could be applied to Frederick Soddy. Mercurial in nature, Soddy found it difficult to attract research students. As a result, it was first Ruth Pirret, then later, Ada Hitchins, who were his essential research assistants, and who undertook much of the work attributed to him.
