Abstract
Both the traditional and “new cyanotype” processes are described, and the procedure for making prints is outlined, with illustrated examples. The appearance of cyanotype sensitizer on paper as it prints out with different exposures is compared to its appearance after processing with water. The concept of toning is explored, regarding dyes that bind to the iron of the cyanotype image, but not to the paper base. We illustrate several different effects that arise from a combination of bleaching and toning.
