Abstract
An efficient and environmentally friendly catalytic process for the production of methyl levulinate through cellulose alcoholysis was developed. The formation of methyl levulinate follows the sequence: cellulose → methyl glucoside → 5-MMF → methyl levulinate, and Brönsted acid played a key role in its high selectivity.
