Abstract

Ru(iii)-NHC complexes (1a–c) have been prepared from RuCl3·3H2Oviaa base free route involving electrophilic C–H activation of azolium salts by Lewis acidic Ru(iii). Complexes 1a–c serve as excellent metal precursors for new Ru(ii)–NHC complexes.
