SO2 – yet another two-faced ligand

Abstract

The SO₂ molecule represents the unique class of systems, which show two-faced behavior. This is the case when the molecule can act as an electron donor or an electron acceptor through the same atom, depending on the environment. In this article, we report the first comprehensive theoretical investigation of the behavior of SO₂ molecules in reaction with different (Lewis acidic or basic) organometallic fragments. Orbital interactions in such adducts were analyzed in detail.
