Abstract
The Ribeira Valley in the 1990s was the largest producer of freshwater fish from the state of São Paulo. Fish farming can once again be highlighted if the obstacles in the production chain are overcome. The objective of this study was to economically evaluate the production of Nile tilapia and pacu in nurseries excavated in rural properties in the Ribeira Valley, southern state of São Paulo. The mean values obtained on the properties were 0.5 kg of final weight for tilapia and 1.0 kg for pacu, apparent feed conversion of 2:1 for tilapia and 1.3:1 for pacu and survival of 76,6% for tilapia and 55.9% for pacu. The economic data, per cycle, also for the properties studied, showed an average disbursement of R$2,900.52, gross income of R$2,689.42, net negative income of R$211.10 and a total operating cost of R$5.75 per kilogram. The creation of Nile tilapia and pacu represented a profitable investment in some properties.
