BackgroundThis article introduces the concept of emerging disabilities as it applies to rehabilitation counseling practice, research, policy, and education.DefinitionEmerging disabilities are those that are either new to medical science or becoming more prevalent in specified subpopulations of people. A case study of a person with an emerging disability (diabetes mellitus) is presented.ImplicationsImplications of emerging disabilities for the field of rehabilitation counseling are discussed.
